AEO Software
The answer-engine optimization software worth knowing in 2026, grouped by the job it actually does — plus how to tell real AEO tooling from a relabelled SEO suite.

The best software for AEO, by job
No single product does all four AEO jobs well, so "best" only means something once you know which job you are buying for. Pick the row that matches your blocker.
| Job to be done | Software in this category | Buy it when |
|---|---|---|
| Audit & readiness | AEO.page free audit · Google Rich Results Test · Schema.org Validator | You do not yet know whether you are structurally citable. Start here — it is free. |
| Citation & visibility tracking | Profound · AthenaHQ · Peec AI · Otterly AI · Scrunch AI · Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit · Ahrefs Brand Radar · Conductor | You need to prove whether changes moved citations. This is the category that justifies recurring spend. |
| Structured data | Schema App · WordLift · Merkle schema generator · Yoast SEO · AEO.page schema generator | Your entity is not resolving. Often solvable with free tooling alone. |
| Content & delivery | Clearscope · SurferSEO · Frase · AEO.page edge | Content is unextractable, or agents cannot reach it at all. |
Citation trackers — the core AEO category
These query the answer engines on a schedule and report where your brand appears, for which prompts, and who is cited instead. Profound and AthenaHQ are the most frequently cited specialists; Peec AI, Otterly AI and Scrunch AI occupy the same space. The established SEO suites have added modules — Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Conductor — which are convenient if you already pay for the suite.
Judge them on two axes only: prompt coverage (how many real queries they test) and engine coverage. A tracker that watches ChatGPT alone is reporting a third of the picture.
Audit tools — start free
A one-time diagnosis of whether your site can be cited at all: schema validity, AI crawler access, extractability. Nothing here needs to cost money. Our free AEO audit scores all three and returns the full findings on screen; Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator cover structured data specifically.
Schema and content tooling
Schema App and WordLift manage structured data as an entity graph rather than page-by-page markup, which matters at scale. For content shape, Clearscope, SurferSEO and Frase were built for SEO briefs but the answer-first discipline they enforce transfers directly to AEO.
Delivery layer — the category most people miss
Everything above measures or authors. None of it changes what an agent actually receives. The delivery layer decides whether AI crawlers are permitted, whether they get rendered HTML, and how fast — which is where most total-invisibility failures live, usually a bot-protection default nobody chose deliberately.
Products are grouped by category rather than ranked 1–15 on purpose: the categories solve different problems, so a single ordered list would compare things that are not substitutes. Full breakdown in the best AEO tools compared.
Which one should you buy first?
There is no single best software for AEO, because the four jobs above are rarely done well by one product. The useful question is which job is currently blocking you:
- You do not know if AI engines cite you. Start with citation tracking — you cannot improve what you cannot see.
- You know you are invisible. Start with audit and crawler access. Unblocking agents is usually a same-day fix and the largest single jump available.
- You are cited but not attributed. This is an entity problem, not a tooling problem. Structured data and consistent naming across sources fix it.
- You are cited and want to defend it. Delivery-layer control and continuous tracking.

Build or buy?
Auditing and schema work are genuinely buildable — they are well-documented checks against public specifications, and a competent engineer can script most of them in a week. Two things are not worth building:
Citation tracking
Requires querying multiple engines continuously at scale and normalising inconsistent, changing output formats. The maintenance cost is the product.
Edge delivery
Bot identification is adversarial and changes constantly. Verifying an agent is genuinely who it claims to be is not a weekend project.
How to evaluate AEO software before you commit
- Ask it to prove crawler access. Not "we read robots.txt" — can it show that a real request from an AI agent reached your origin and what it received?
- Check per-engine scoring. One blended "AI score" hides which engine you are failing, and they weight signals differently.
- Look for extraction testing. Does it evaluate whether a passage survives being quoted alone?
- Confirm it is measuring, not asserting. Some tools report what should earn citations rather than whether you actually got any.
- Test the free tier honestly. If the free audit withholds the findings and emails you a sales call, that is lead capture, not software.
- Check data handling. Anything crawling your site and storing results is processing your data — know the retention and the sub-processors.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO software different from SEO software?
Yes. SEO software reports keyword positions, backlinks and Core Web Vitals. None of those tell you whether GPTBot can reach your page, whether your structured data resolves as an entity, or whether a model can extract a passage without losing its meaning. Some SEO suites now ship an AEO module — the test of whether it is real is whether it verifies crawler access at the edge and scores each engine separately.
Do I need to pay for AEO software?
Not to start. Auditing and schema validation are well served by free tools, and the highest-impact fixes — unblocking AI crawlers, adding valid JSON-LD, restructuring content into extractable blocks — cost nothing but effort. Paid software earns its place when you need continuous citation tracking, or delivery control across many pages.
How quickly does AEO software show results?
Crawler-access fixes show up as soon as the engines re-crawl, often within days. Structured data and content restructuring take longer, because the model has to re-encounter and corroborate the change across sources. Treat anything promising citations in 48 hours with suspicion.
